The Mind’s-Eye View

A Portrait of Prospective Adoptive Couples

If you are considering adoption as a solution to your pregnancy, you probably have wondered what kind of people need to adopt and why. You may have even thought about the type of family you would choose for your child if you were to create an adoption plan. And you may wonder who they are, where to find them, and why they wish to adopt.

There are many faces you could put on these couples. In fact, there are almost five million couples each year, or one out of every six couples, who have tried for more than a year to get pregnant, but struggle with some degree of infertility. Only half of such couples will eventually be helped by medical technology. The other half will remain unable to start a family or have more biological children. For these couples or families, adoption is the only way they will ever be able to realize their dreams of parenthood or expanding their family.

Adoptive couples come from almost every religious and cultural background imaginable. But they all share one thing in common: a strong love for children and a need to nurture them, which has led their adoption search to you. They care about what you are going through, and they want to help you and your baby if you decide to create an adoption plan.

Regardless of how you handle your adoption, private or agency, open or closed, most adoptive couples typically will be between ages 30 and 45, have college degrees, are employed in managerial or professional positions, own their own home, have been married two to seven years, and attend church often. Many plan to have one parent stay-at-home to raise the child. Many are active in sports, hobbies or volunteer activities. Some have pets, or live in the city or on farms. All of them have the strong desire to love, nurture and support a child, and they are looking for a child with whom to start building their family.

Finding Adoptive Couples
Whether you are planning your adoption through an agency or privately through an attorney, both will be able to provide photographs and biographies of prospective adoptive couples from which you can choose. Adoption agencies can be found in the Yellow Pages under “Adoption Services,” while adoption attorneys can be found listed under “Attorneys,” beneath the “Adoption” heading.
If you plan a private adoption you may also be able to find prospective adoptive couples listed under the “Personal” or “Adoption” column in the classified section of your local newspapers.

Options Magazine can also put you in touch with many prospective adoptive couples. In this magazine you will find numerous photos and biographies of couples who are eager to provide a life of love and opportunity for a child.

In addition to the biographies in this magazine, you can visit www.optionsmagazine.com and search through our online registry of waiting adoptive families. The registry will allow you to search by race, religion, number of children, area of the country and much more.

This is one of the most important decisions you will ever make in your life and your child’s life, so read about adoption in this magazine and seek counseling regarding the option of adoption. This will enable you to be as well informed as possible about the type of adoption plan you may want to create for your child. Then knowing you have the right information, you will be better able to make the decision that will be best for both you and your child.
