What happens to me?

If you are sweating more, have nasal congestion, or are suffering from increased vaginal discharge this is nothing to worry about. It is due to the increased blood volume and will go away after the baby is born.

It is possible that you may occasionally feel faint or dizzy. Many women during pregnancy experience fluctuations in their blood pressure when they stand up too quickly or when they stand in one place for too long. Stand up slowly and hold onto something until you are sure you feel all right. If you feel faint, sit down again. If you are in a situation where you must stand still for a long time, periodically take a few steps or insist on a break where you can sit down. If this dizziness or faintness happens very often, be sure to check with your doctor.

You may also feel a slight pain in your sides when you move suddenly. Ligaments on each side of your uterus and pelvic walls are stretching as the baby grows. It's normal to feel some pain, but if it continues for a few days or escalates, talk to your doctor.

How much will I be showing?

Your uterus continues to expand and is now approximately 2 inches below your belly button. You are probably showing more now and are starting to have more noticeable swelling in your abdomen. At this point a 5-10 pound weight gain is normal.

What happens to baby?

The baby is forming fat deposits under its skin. By the end of pregnancy this will account for 2-6% of the total body weight. This fat will help the baby maintain its body temperature when it is born. Loud noises may actually cause the baby to startle.

Babies are extremely playful and there is a good chance that the baby has already discovered its first toy, the umbilical cord. The baby will pull, grab and sometimes squeeze the cord, but never long enough to harm itself.

The circulatory system and urinary tract are in full working order, and the baby is inhaling and exhaling amniotic fluid through its lungs.

How big is the baby?

The baby is now about the size of an avocado, nearly 5 inches long and weighing approximately 3 ½ ounces. In the next three weeks, the baby will go through a tremendous growth spurt, doubling its weight and adding inches to its length.

Tip of the Week
