What happens to me?

It is during this week that you actually became pregnant (the egg meets the sperm)! You probably will not know you are pregnant for a few weeks, though some women swear they know the exact moment they conceived. Around mid-cycle (day 14 of a typical 28-day cycle), you ovulate and one of your eggs is swept into your Fallopian tube. In the next 12 to 24 hours that egg can be fertilized. After the egg is fertilized it implants itself in your uterus. Sometimes there is a slight amount of bleeding when the egg is becoming implanted, but this is perfectly normal.

How much will I be showing?

At this point you will notice no changes.

What happens to baby?

Once fertilized, the egg is called a zygote, and immediately closes its outer membrane to the rest of the sperm that have made it this far. It then begins dividing into identical cells and will begin the 7 to 10 day journey down the Fallopian tube to the uterus, where it will continue to grow. Once it has implanted, the fertilized egg is called a blastocyst.

The baby’s sex is determined at the time of fertilization and is determined by the type of sperm that fertilizes the egg. Y-Chromosome bearing sperm will produce a male and X-Chromosome bearing sperm will produce a female.

How big is the baby?

Extremely small, the blastocyst is about 0.1-0.2 mm in diameter.

Tip of the Week

Over-the-counter pregnancy test can be extremely reliable indicating a pregnancy as early as 10 days after conception!
